Former Senior Health Advisor to U. S. Senator Lisa Murkowski

Amanda Makki is currently seeking the Republican nomination for Congress in the 13th District of Florida which includes Clearwater Beach and Saint Petersburg. Prior to this, she was a Partner with K&L Gates, recognized as one of the premier public policy firms in the nation. Before this, Ms. Makki served as Director of FDA Legislation and External Affairs for Novo Nordisk, a Danish pharmaceutical company where she led the global health care company’s external affairs efforts and managed legislation relating to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). She worked with pharmaceutical and medical trade associations as well as to authorize funding for the National Institutes for Health (NIH).

Prior to her private sector experience, she served for over a decade in both the legislative and executive branches of the federal government, where she served for more than seven years as the senior health advisor to Senator Lisa Murkowski (R-AK), a member of the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP) Committee during debate and passage of the Affordable Care Act. While serving in Senator Murkowski’s office, she developed numerous pieces of health care legislation and amendments, and helped to set overall messaging and policy strategy for the senator. She also worked for Congressman Jeff Fortenberry (R-NE), a member of the House Appropriations Committee, where she provided legal counsel on healthcare and education issues. While in law school, Ms. Makki served as legal intern for Senator Judd Gregg (R-NH), HELP Committee Chairman where she worked on a variety of issues including medical malpractice legislation, drug importation, and legislation pertaining to the FDA. Ms. Makki’s federal agency experience includes working for the Army General Counsel at the Pentagon as a George W. Bush political appointee.

Amanda was born in Tehran and immigrated with her family to the United States when she was an infant in 1979. She is fluent in Farsi and Spanish.
